Relation between Discrimination and Identification of English Vowels

چکیده
This experiment determined the relation between discrimination thresholds and thejudgement of vowels as good, confusable, or non-English. A large Fl-by-F2 vowel space encompassing five American English front vowels was synthesized in equal Bark steps. The structure of the vowel space was quite different across listeners except for the vowels /i/ and Gael. Discrimination thresholds were uniform across good and confusable vowels but elevated for non-English vowels. No evidence for a perceptual magnet effect was found.

Effects of attention and training method on the identification of American English vowels and coda nasals by native Japanese listeners
The accuracy with which native Japanese listeners identified American English vowels and coda nasals was assessed before and after training. The listeners were divided into four groups, each of which received a different type of training. Two of the four groups were vowel-oriented; one of these groups received vowel identification training (VI), while the other received vowel discrimination tra...
متن کاملDiscrimination of English vowels in consonantal contexts by native speakers of Japanese and its relations to dynamic information of formants
This study examined how differently native speakers of Japanese discriminated between the American English vowels // and /æ/ in /CVd/ syllables with 23 different initial consonants, and how the differing discrimination was related to the changes of formant patterns throughout the vowels in comparison with the Japanese vowels /e/ and /a/. A perceptual test and formant analyses of the English an...

Difficulties with second-language vowel perception may be related to the significant challenges in using acoustic-phonetic cues. This study investigated the effects of perception training with duration-equalized vowels on native Chinese listeners' English vowel perception and their use of acoustic-phonetic cues. Seventeen native Chinese listeners were perceptually trained with duration-equalize...

Seventeen French-English bilinguals read aloud a set of English sentences and performed an ABX discrimination task that assessed their perception of the English / /-/i/ contrast. Global nativelikeness in production correlated with pronunciation accuracy for the vowels / / and /i/, and both production measures correlated with self-estimated pronunciation skills. However, performance on the perce...
متن کاملEvidence of a near-merger in western sydney australian English vowels
Research on various dialects of English has demonstrated the existence of so-called near-mergers. The present study examines the identification and discrimination of the vowels of Western Sydney Australian English, for which no such mergers have been previously documented. We find evidence for perceptual confusion of / /-/ / (in /hVb /), despite significant acoustic differences in productions o...
